SUBJECT MATTER: GLOBAL RECESSION
Mr President! After this brief introduction of myself, now, I try to deal with the Global Recession which is the ‘Hot’subject in the whole world.
Mr President! Global recession is product of the ‘economic forces’. When ‘global recession’ emerges then it has to take its time to evaporate provided the right polices are devised and put into practice. For example: a hurricane is product of velocity of winds. When it arrives then it does what its properties warrant it to do. It leaves its consequences where it takes time to remedy the effect and impact of the consequences. The consequences of hurricane are: destruction of properties, trees, agricultural produces, industry etc.
Mr President! The consequences of ‘global recession’ are: unemployment, fall of share prices indices, fall in GDP etc.
Mr President! Before I embark upon to highlight the base of the current ‘global recession, let us go back to the basics which gave rise to monetary units, banking, credit cards as these are the regulatorsof the business dealings in every sphere of life.
Wealth
Mr President! In fact, wealth is outcome of the utilisation of faculties; abilities and capabilities. For example: when a seed is sown in the land, water it, protect it from the hazards then the properties of the universe are enjoined to make it grow which takes time and the produce emerges which can be used to keep body and soul together and this gives rise to business dealingsi.e. buying and selling through barter, monetary units, cheques and credit cards.
MEDIUM OF EXCHANGE
Mr President! The medium of exchange of goods and services are:
-
barter system
-
gold and silver
-
notes and coins
-
cheques
-
credit: loans, overdraft,
-
credit cards
Mr President! Let us look at the above medium of exchange one by one.
Barter System
Mr President! When there was no medium of exchange i.e. monetary units at that time the exchange of goods were made through bartersystem e.g. wheat in exchange of rice or meat in exchange of milk etc.
Gold and Silver
Mr President! The barter system was not workablee.g. if a person has meat and wanted wheat but the person who has wheat he does not need meat then what will the first person do.
Mr President! In short, the medium of exchange was determined gold and silver i.e. the coins can be exchanged for any goods and services.
Evolution of Banks
Mr President!
-
The people had savings in the form of gold and silver and there was a danger that it can be lost or stolen.
-
In short, the people with savings approached the goldsmiths who were rich and trusted people. They asked them to keep their savings and they will pay a monthly fee for the protection of their savings. The goldsmiths agreed.
-
Goldsmiths thought that as these are savings and the people will not need the whole amount for sometime, so what they did was to retain 10% and lent 90% to the businessmen charging them fee termed as interest.
-
In short, on 10% retention basis a savings of £1,000 gave rise to loans of around £9,000. This gave rise to circulation of money of an additional £9,000 which resulted in increase in prices of the goods. For example: let us assume there were 1,000 items and £1,000 coins of gold. So at this point the price of each item is £1. But when the circulation of money was £10,000 then the price of each item increased to £10 per item.
Gold Standard: Notes and Coins
Mr President!
-
It was not easy to carry bags of gold and silver and there was always chance of losing them or be stolen.
-
The government issued paper notes and coins made of copper, nickel and brass as medium of exchange backed by 100% gold and silver. This meant that anyone can buy one unit of gold with a note of £1.
-
Gradually, the quantity of money was backed by smaller percentage of gold and silver e.g. £1,000
notes were supported by 80% of gold. Previously £1 would have bought unit of gold but now £1.25would buy one unit of gold. In most countries the gold standard has been abolished.
Cheques
Mr President! When goldsmiths gave 90% loans on the basis of savings they used to give the customers receipts i.e. a cheque book which they can use as medium of exchange. In this way the bank notes and coins were not drawn from the bank and the moneys were transferred by way of a transactioni.e. debit to person who has drawn cheque and credit to the recipient’s account.
Credit: Loans, Bank overdraft
Mr President! The banks facilitated the loan and overdraft facilities which gave rise to increase in circulation of money but the actual cash is at far lowerlevel.
Credits by the Suppliers
Mr President! To increase the business activity the industrialists, wholesalers etc gave credit facilitiesto the traders i.e. buy now pay later. This also gave rise to increase in circulation of money but the actual cash remained the same.
Credit Cards
Mr President! As the industry expanded and there were a lot of goods and services in the market but consumers did not have the hard cash to buy them, so the financial institutions introduced credit cards. The financial institution were charging the traders should the consumer bought their product and for consumer they determined concept of minimum payment per month and interest was charged upon the remaining balance until the debt is fully paid. This gave rise to further increase in circulation of money which resulted in risein prices of goods and services.
Deficit
Mr President! Deficit emerges when at government level the Inland Revenue i.e. taxes, duties fall short of the anticipated budget. The government has to print the money to meet its obligations. This gives rise to further increase in circulation of money and rise in prices of goods and services in the long run.
CONCLUSION
Mr President!
-
The conclusion of the above mediums of exchange boils down to is that the economic forces are regulated by monetary policy and fiscal policy.
-
Over the years, the hard cash was far less than money in circulation which gave rise to ‘global recession’ for the last two years. But this was the result of a number of years of economic forces which were regulated by far less hard cash than the money in circulation. As mentioned above, the savings of £1,000 gave rise to circulation of £10,000 i.e. increasing the price per unit from £1 to £10.
OVERVIEW OF POLITICS OF UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Mr President!
-
I have been over viewing the politics of USA since May 2008 when both Democrats and Republicans were campaigning for nomination race. I believe at that time John McCain had won the nomination for the Republican Party but the nomination campaign was still in process for Democrats among you, Hillary Clinton and John Edwards.
-
I happened to see video clips on www.youtube in respect of your nomination campaign. In one of the video clips there was an issue of race. Both Hillary Clinton and John Edward tried to avoid and did not deal with it specifically. But you had dealt with the race issue specifically and highlighted the race issue still exists and it should have to be given due importance. Mr President! At that time I made a forecast that the next President of USA will be Barrack Obama while Hillary Clinton was favourite for nomination at the time and the election had to be contested with John McCain. One of my niece lives in America. During our telephone conversation I told her that the next President of USA will be Barrack Obama.
-
When you were close to winning the nomination at that time I made following forecasts:-
-
Hillary Clinton will be Secretary of State
-
You will also engage Bill Clinton in some role
-
You will also engage John Kerry
Mr President! The above forecasts were not based on guess but were based upon rationalanalysis. Let us look at the rational analysis.
Hillary Clinton
Mr President!
-
In your speeches I gathered that you are man who has a concern for the people and you want to you recruit the best people in your team.
-
Hillary Clinton had the calibre of becoming the President of USA. The job of Secretary of State is next to the President of USA i.e. to deal with foreign affairs. So no one could be better than Hillary Clinton.
-
She was First Lady for eight years when Bill Clinton was President of USA. Therefore, she was aware of the job of a President of USA and the politics has to be administered.
Mr President! No doubt you will realise that the image of USA has improved since George Bush left office. However, the credit also goes to you as well as within the short sphere of time you have visited all the important countries of the world e.g. China, Russia, Egypt, Canada, and Mexico etc. Moreover, nationally, you went and made speeches in the states which warranted your attention. Furthermore, you attended all the conferencese.g. G20, global warming etc.
Bill Clinton
Mr President! Bill Clinton had been President of USA for eight years. Moreover, he did not sit idle when he was out of the White House. He continued to be active in USA politics and also on social fronts where he set up an organisation Clinton Global Initiative
to contribute from private sector to public sector. As below as extract from the website: www.clintonglobalinitiative.org:
Building on President Clinton’s lifetime in public service, the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) reflects his belief that governments need collaboration from the private sector, non-governmental organizations, and other global leaders to effectively confront the world’s most pressing problems. After attending thousands of meetings during his career in which urgent needs were discussed but no action was taken to solve them, President Clinton saw a need to establish a new kind of meeting with an emphasis on results.
Mr President! No doubt you must have been aware of Bill Clinton’s interest in politics which would have made you use the calibre and experience of Bill Clinton as President of USA.
John Kerry
Mr President! John Kerry contested election as President of USA against George Bush. So he had also the calibre to play an effective role in USA politics.
Use of Republican’s Calibre
Mr President! Once you were elected as President of USA, you immediately set upon to assume the responsibility of President of USA in the transition period i.e. picking up members of your team. In this process I envisaged that you will also engage the members of the Republican Party in your team because your goal was to serve the people and not the DemocraticParty. My visualisation proved correct.
Conclusion
Mr President! I believe the above will depict that I have been taking interest in US politics minutely. For this purpose I have been viewing www.msnbc.com since May 2008 every night for more than two hours which gives me overview of the politics of the whole world. In other words, I am listening to the top brainsof the world i.e. heads of the states, senators, congressmen, members of parliaments, journalists, columnists, editors, historians, interviewers etc.
STATE OF POLITICS WHEN YOU ASSUMED OFFICE AS PRESIDENT OF USA
Mr President! When you assumed office as President of USAas below is that state of Politics:
-
two wars: Afghanistan and Iraq
-
global recession
-
whole economy in turmoil i.e.
-
Job losses 700,000 per month
-
AIG on the verge of liquidation
-
Wall Street and stock markets of the world were on the verge of collapse as the share price indices were going down and down
-
Ford and Chrysler were on the verge of bankruptcy
-
House repossessions were on the rise
-
Deficit more than trillion dollars
-
Unemployment record high
-
Issue of global warming
-
Etc.
Mr President! This turmoil in economy was not only in USA but in every country of the world and has far reaching effect and impact.
To remedy the Turmoil
Mr President! To remedy the turmoil in the economy there was no alternative other than to print money and rescue the big businesses otherwise if economy of USA collapsed then the economy of whole worldwould have collapsed as USA is leading the world in every field: industry, agriculture, medicine, innovation, astronomy etc.
Mr President! To remedy the turmoil in the economy you took the following steps:
-
passed a Stimulus Bill for around $800 billion to cater for:
-
AIG bail out
-
Bank bail out
-
Tax cuts for middle class
-
Projects like roads, bridges, rail etc to create jobs
-
Etc
-
Put Ford in liquidation where it can emerge as a new entity so that not only jobs are saved but also many business which would have collapsed should Ford had disappeared from the scene
-
Merged Chrysler with Fiat where jobs were not lost but also foreign capital had come in the USA
WHY YOUR POLICIES DID NOT WORK EFFECTIVELY
Mr President! To work polices effective it is necessary that both parties i.e. government and public join hands. It is the job of the government to devise policies and it is job of the public to implement those policies. Mr President! The policies will not be effective however those may be perfect in every respect until those are implemented in orderly manner. Mr President! As below are the reasons which did not let your policies be effective.
Deregulation
Mr President! In short, ‘deregulation’ does not let the government interfere with the policies of the private sector. It is because of deregulation that Wall Street, AIG and big financial institutions have paid out big bonuses in spite of the fact that the bail out money was taxpayer’smoney.
Lamp of Aladdin
Mr President! During campaign when you made the slogan of ‘Change’ then people came under the impression that when you will assume the office of President of USA every issue will be solved automatically and they will not have to contribute anything other than they will enjoythe amenities of life.
GOP: Republican Party
Mr President!
-
GOP is in opposition. Technically, the job of the opposition party is to highlight those points in the Bills which may not be in the interest of the people at large.
-
I mentioned I have been viewing the politics since May 2008. Since you moved in the White House I am viewing the politics from a differentangle i.e. what are your policies:
-
do policies take the basic of the issue into consideration?
-
are the policies in line with the social and economic structure of USA?
-
is the opposition of the policies is based upon constructive oppositionor opposition for the sake of opposition?
Mr President! My observations depict that you are confronted with high office and GOP who do not want you to succeed as President of USA. They do not have any personal grudge with you. They likeyou, they respect you but they do not want (Please excuse my blunt language) that a ‘African American’ President take the credit of putting the economy and social structure on the right lines when the economy is in turmoil.
Mr President! As below are the examples which depict the indifference of GOP to your policies:
Mr President! Recently, I have heard your State of Union Speech. You had received standing ovation many a times from the Congress and Senate but not from GOP.
Invitation by GOP
Mr President! You accepted the invitation of GOP to address.
SUSPENSION OF WRITING LETTER
Mr President! At this point I had to deal with some family issues where I had to suspend writing this letter. However, at this point in time the object is to win back the Democrat supporters along with Republican and Tea Party supporters where the rest of the data will deal with the issues.
May Allah be with you.
Wa’Assalam
[May Allah Bless you]
