Obama on the challenges of reaching across the aisle
Jan. 29: President Obama addresses Congressman Peter Roskam on the subject of bipartisanship and the way modern politics has made a political liability of working with the enemy party.
Mr President! As below is the transcript of the video clip critical Analysis by the media.
Rachel:We are back msnbc special coverage of President Obama unprecedented televised Question and Answer with Republicans behind enemy lines believe it or not even though he was behind enemy line he seems to have find a friend there. Listen to this one.
Question by Peter Roskam
CONGRESSMAN PENCE: Thank you, Mr. President. Peter Roskam from the great state of Illinois.
THE PRESIDENT: Oh, Peter is an old friend of mine.
CONGRESSMAN ROSKAM: Hey, Mr. President.
THE PRESIDENT: Peter and I have had many debates.
Question by Congressman Peter Roskam
CONGRESMAN ROSKAM: Well, this won’t be one. Mr. President, I heard echoes today of the state senator that I served with in Springfield and there was an attribute and a characteristic that you had that I think served you well there. You took on some very controversial subjects — death penalty reform — you and I —
THE PRESIDENT: Sure. We worked on it together.
President is Listening to the Question
CONGRESSMAN ROSKAM: — negotiated on. You took on ethics reform. You took on some big things. One of the keys was you rolled your sleeves up, you worked with the other party, and ultimately you were able to make the deal. Now, here’s an observation:
Over the past year, in my view, that attribute hasn’t been in full bloom.
Answer by the President
THE PRESIDENT: Well, first of all, Peter and I did work together effectively on a whole host of issues. One of our former colleagues is right now running for governor, on the Republican side, in Illinois. In the Republican primary, of course, they’re running ads of him saying nice things about me. Poor guy. (Laughter)
Although that’s one of the points that I made earlier, I mean, we’ve got to be careful about what we say about each other sometimes, because it boxes us in ways that makes it difficult for us to work together, because our constituents start believing us. They don’t know sometimes this is just politics what you guys — or folks on my side do sometimes.
So just a tone of civility instead of slash and burn would be helpful. The problem we have sometimes is a media that responds only to slash-and-burn-style politics. You don’t get a lot of credit if I say, “You know, I think Paul Ryan is a pretty sincere guy and has a beautiful family.”
Nobody is going to run that in the newspapers.
Q: (Inaudible.) (Laughter)
President Consoles for his Comments
THE PRESIDENT: And by the way, in case he’s going to get a Republican challenge, I didn’t mean it. (Laughter) Don’t want to hurt you, man. (Laughter)
Rachel:Chris! To hear President might there be talking about Constituents might actually believe us. We have to be careful. We know it is just politics. Is it being naïve there I mean, I feel when I look at it some of the anger, and the way Republicans members of the House particular addressthere those rallies and everything? It is not just politics, they mean it.
Chris!

Well! The Republican Party is under (inaudible) from his far rightlike I don’t remember that either party used (inaudible) by its extremes. There seems to be a new sort of purity test; unless you are far right you are not a Republican and this sort of tea purity test doing now asking people about into the Birther issue and whether they think issues like, well, social security is Socialistic or Medicare are the same.
-
These questions being asked of regular Republicans Glen Beck the inevitable one the other day say that if you are regular Republican, basically you are suspect. You may well a secret progressive. In fact we must assume that. So this party is really being tugged over to the Right.
-
What John McCain voting right for the next year? I think it is gona reflect the fact that it is got J D. Look at somebody like Charlie Chris. It was presumed to be a pretty attractive Candidate for Senator from Florida. Now he is behind in the numbers to Mark o Rubio who is favourite.
-
What’s going on there on Republican party is a kind of a frightening almost Cambodian re- education camp going on in the party going round the people so that switching their minds, saying if you are not far right, you are not right enough. I think its really going to be lot of extreme language Republican side it may there be circular firing squad when it is all over.
Rachel:Keith! is the President trying to sort of split Republicans from the base?
Keith:
-
No! I think this is where that exchange and many others is what props those words like arrogant to be used because what the President is saying is this is the way it should be. These were the rules that always been. I am trying to play by them. Why I am the only one going in the room and I think that what ultimately the real anger towards him, how it is expressed by the Constituents who fired up or the representatives who are then in turn in Bolden or frightened of their own Constituents and get louder and angrier, they suspend their own rules and I think that was what President being not naïve necessarily but to some degree wishful thinking and to some degree saying that I am going to be refereehere, if you are not going to try.
Rachel: They also sort of saying you want to work with me I see why you can’t. Let me explain to you why you can’t. I am going to keep offering you should work with me, we all know it is not going to happen. Next question being the most heated exchange of the day. It is between President and Republican Congressman Jeb.
Mr President! No doubt this gives you and your team ammunition to win back the support of Democrat, Republican and Tea Party supporters.
May Allah be with you.
Wa’Assalam
[May Allah Bless you]
